I am having a problem that I am hoping someone can help me with.  Not sure if I am posting in the right section, if not feel free to move the post.

Basically about 2 years ago I bought a house and got a new land line set up.  Shortly after that I started getting phone calls from “Unknown” asking for someone (let’s say Bob).  Of course I explained they had the wrong number, but the calls kept coming.  I decided to get the number changed.  A few months went by and then the calls for Bob started coming again, even more than the first time.  I did some research and it turns out at some point Bob lived at my address so I guess they are associating the number with the address.  This time around the number was coming up on the called id and I found out it was Portfolio, so I sent them a letter.  Soon after the number was coming up as “unknown” again.  The unknown caller never tells me who they are, the name of there business, or any other details.  I have explained over a dozen times that they have the wrong number and please remove it, I have asked to speak to a supervisor and they hang up on me, I have asked for their address to send them a letter but they refuse.  Do you think I am still dealing with Portfolio?

Any suggestions on how to get this to stop??

Hi everyone! I just wanted to share my experiences, since this board has helped me immensely in the last month to improve my credit. It’s bad for several reasons (job loss, marriage problems, raised without fiscal common sense), but I finally decided to take charge of my own finances.

I almost signed up with a credit repair firm because I’ve always relied on someone else to look after these things. But b/c of the members here, I got a whole lot more done on my own in less than 30 days than they were going to do in 3 months.

Yeah it’s still bad. My report is as bad as you can get without having a bankruptcy, judgement, or public record!

Thanks to all of the education I’ve received from here, I managed to remove a a paid collection (Diversified Adjustments) and one old collection (NCO Financial) that was due to fall off of my reports this year. I’m still struggling with a small AFNI debt, as they have not responded to my PFD offers, but it’s due to fall off my reports in 2012.

I also have many charge-offs that are (unfortunately) more recent. I decided to arrange payment plans for all of these before they were sold to collection agencies. One of them was actually sold to a CA shortly before I started getting involved in my own finances, so I wanted to prevent that from happening with the others. Since these charge-offs were all from 2009, I didn’t think I had a lot of leverage to negotiate PFD.

Since then I’ve been able to get a new credit card with Orchard Bank ($320 limit), a secured card through Public Savings Bank ($500 limit), and I do have a Barclays with iTunes card ($250) from my better days that I was able to hold onto.

I still have a long way to go before I reach my goal, but I know that the most important thing I can do now is build a good history and wait. :) Thanks myFICO!

I broke a lease back in Feb. 2008. I good reason to do so. I even hired a lawyer before moving to make sure I was doing things right. I actually had 2 good reasons to move.  I made a deal with the property management (Oct. 2007) , that I would stay until Jan. 2008 and then leave hassle free. Of course after I moved, I started getting bills for the remaining 6 months on my lease. Then a Law firm started threating me with lawsuits if I dont pay. I had my lawyer deal with them. My lawyer responded with my side of the story and  we were quite prepared to take our case to court if they choose that route. The law firm avised the property management not to try and take legal action because our case was very strong. The decided not to pursue the matter any further.

Fast forward to Sep. 2009, I find out the law firm reported to all three CRA’s. I sent a letter to the law firm demanding that they withdraw the collections charge off or else. The only thing is, I don’t know what “or else” is.  What can I do about it? I wanted them to try and sue me, but they decided not to. Can I sue a CA  to force them to remove the collections?  I am not looking to sue for any money damages. I rather not have to go file a law suit and deal with it as a plantiff at all. But I will if thats possible.  Seems to me this is not legal. They know they have no case, but do I?

 Thanks
