I contacted Geico March 1st to pay off an old debt from when I cancelled my policy and was pleasantly surprised when the customer service representative told me no collection agency was involved. We agreed to pay the balance in two equal payments, one this month, one next. And I figured this one was less debt to worry about. Yesterday I received a letter from a CA acknowledging the payment I had just made and demanding the remainder of the balance within two days, so I called Geico again only to be told it looked as though on March 1st (that’s right, the same day!) the account was forwarded to the collection agency and that it was likely the representative I spoke with couldn’t see that in the system yet. So they happily took the rest of the payment and said there was nothing they could do as far as assuring me it wouldn’t be reported in the future.
I don’t know how often it happens that a debt is paid literally at the same time it’s transferred to a CA, but how likely is it that the CA would report? If they choose to report it, do I have grounds for disputing it?
The CA involved is Credit Collection Services. Does anyone have any personal experience with them?
I also got my first successful GW response in the mail yesterday. One step forward, one step back. . . .
