I had a medical collection for $75 on my report that I paid in October– before I was aware that I could get such things removed. The OC would not accept the money at the time, and directed me to the CA. I did so and forked over the cash.
Â
Last month, I contacted the CA because the collection is showing up on my report twice: once as unpaid, once as paid (but with different account numbers.) They had recently updated their software systems, and have had problems with new account numbers being generated for everyone who paid from September of last year until now. She told me that while she can get the unpaid version removed by the first of April when her office reports to the CRAs again, she can not remove the paid version as she does not have the power to do so. As of April 2nd, this entry is still on my report– TWICE– and both entries are factored into my negative accounts number. Unacceptable!

I contacted the OC to see if they had this agency assigned on their behalf, and if they could have it removed. A very sweet woman emailed me, then called me to explain that the hospital changed billing companies a few months after my visit date. There is a woman who works part time for the hospital handling old cold files like mine, but it could be a few weeks before she contacts me to determine if she has the power to delete or not.

I’ve pored over the forums in the hopes of finding a coherent explanation of someone getting a collection that was paid to the CA removed from their reports– but with little luck.

Does HIPAA apply? If so, does anyone have a link that will explain to me what I need to do at this phase? If HIPAA does not apply, what should my next step be? Do I contact the CRAs? Do I contact the CA? Do I curl up in the fetal position with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s within arms’ reach?
