I am a crime victim that lost all my life’s savings and ran up two credit cards to $100k total under threat of death. The criminal was arrested in 2006, indicted by grand jury in 2007 and awaits trial. In the meantime, damage done. My father-in-law stepped in and got a lawyer to help me with the 2 credit cards. They were combined and paid off at a 50% charge off as settlement for the full amount. We were lead to believe this was the understanding.

That was in April of 2007. Fast forward to July of 2010, and I am back on my feet. I have always had perfect credit and did before and after the crime. I have saved and am a fairly high earner. I went to refinance my home, having watched my Transcredit (Transunion credit online protection account) show my credit scores as 960, 946,936. Yes, they use a 990 system. All are in the ‘A’ average range.

I was shocked to learn yesterday from my mortgage broker for a major bank that they are going to have to decline my mortgage because of the two credit card combined into one charge off’s from 2007, despite the fact it is clear it is not my pattern and it was because of the crime.

Do I have any options here?

Thank you.
