My wife and I have been paying off our collection accounts for the past 2 months. We are trying to purchase our first home.  A realtor advised us to get our collection accounts to a zero balance. We recently checked our credit too see  if there was any progress. And my wife score dropped. She figured it was because of her 50,000 student loan that have 30, 60, and 90 latest. She contacted Direct Loan and they honored a deferment to start form the first day of being late. Will the action help her in any way. Or at least move up her score

I’ve been working on fixing my credit now for 2 and half years now. I’ve cleaned up and paid off all the bad debt that was on my credit report before I purchased my house 2 years ago. About two weeks ago I get this letter in the mail stating that I have an  outstanding debt for a credit card that was on my credit report before that came off after seven years. This credit card was opened in my name when I was just 16 and still in high school one of my parents opened this card in my name and charged up on it without me ever knowing. I found this out after I was of legal age and never paid it because it was never my bill to start with. After seven years of being on my credit report it came off the credit report.Which would have been in 2005 or 2006. I would like to write them a letter disputting this debt because of how old the debt is. I need to know how to dispute this without agreeing this is my debt.

I believe other collection agencys are buying these old debt and trying to collect on items past their collection period. The other reason is they seen I paid off other debt that was in my name

So my questions are

I’m I financially obligated to repay this debt off after the 7 years collection period has passed?

Will they always try to collect on a debt that has not been paid?

Can this reappear on my credit report now as bad debt if I dont pay this off?

Can they reopen an old account that was taken off the credit report after 7 years?

Need help fast because I need to write to them and dispute this debt!

I have a medical bill from 2008 (under $100) from an ER visit.  I paid it online directly to the OC (hospital), but I did not pay it until approximately June 2009.  I never received any documents from the OC stating the payment was misdirected .  It showed up on my credit report under 1 collection agency (CA) in 2010; then, I disputed it and it was deleted.  However, this medical collection that I’ve already paid directly to the OC has recently shown up on my March 2011 credit report under a 2nd CA called Pinnacle Financial Group.  Note, I have not received any phone calls and do not believe I’ve received any letters in the mail fron Pinnacle.  This has adversely impacted my credit score by almost 40 points.

From what I’ve read and my understanding of FCRA, attempting to collect a debt and reporting it to CRA is illegal.  Is this correct?  I have disputed this and awaiting a response.  However, what rights will I have if EQ, TU or EXP do not delete it from my credit report?  Also, what is the statute of limitations (SOL) for a CA to attempt to collect debt on a medical bill in North Carolina?  What’s so frustrating is that my credit score that I’ve been working on for a couple of years has fallen from 620 to 584 as a result of this collection recently being reported on my credit profile.

I am considering filing a complaint to State Attorney General’s Office from which Pinnacle is HQ’d.

TIA!

I have a collection account from 2007 that was paid off almost immediately. On my last direct report from  Equifax it shows the status as “Paid”, however the collection account still shows up (with no paid status) in myFico. The balance does show correctly at $0, however, is this still affecting my credit score as it is flagged all over the report as having a negative collection on file? Is this like the others that just need to “fall off” after several years? or something I should dispute and request removal?

Also, do I have to buy the report all over again through equifax to get the report number so I can dispute online? Why is there no report number supplied through myFico as they are just taking the report and reformatting it to look pretty and display it on here?

Thanks in advance for any help on this

So, now that I have most of my collection accounts deleted, I’m wondering about those OC accounts that show a zero balance b/c of charge-off. Is the effect that they have on my credit report even worth trying to send a GW letter to get them off of there? They are all at least four years old.

Question:  Yesterday, I rcvd a letter in the mail from a collection agency stating that I owe $1045.00 for school and if I do not pay it, I could have a judgement placed against me.  The balance is from 2007.  I called the school that I attended 4 years ago and yes they told me that I had a balance-I knew that I left there owing some money but put off paying it until I could afford it.  Since then I moved, got married and moved again and haven’t thought about it in a long time-Irresponsible me!

Okay, well today I went to the school to pay it cause well 1) I owed the money and 2) I owed the money.  I know most companies won’t let you pay if they have already sent off to collection agency because they have to pay to do that.  She let me pay.  Does this mean they will pull it from the collection agency & it not show on my CR?  I thought about responding to the letter that I rcvd from the CA and asking them to validate the debt now that it is paid.  Should I send a DV to CRA’s?The school asked if I did rcv the letter from the CA and I told them no that I was thinking of going back to school and taking some classes in the summer and when I called to see what all I needed to do to enroll and that’s when I learned of the balance.  ok, ok so I did fib there but the point is I paid it.  Now what?  Please advise-been making progress on my CR and paying those that I do owe.

Thanks!!!!!
