Small indicators of success – preapproval from capital one

Mar 072011

I recently paid off the remaining balance on a closed capital one and a discover card.  I still have a BofA card and a Chase card that were closed that I am paying down.  I will finally pay those off when my tax return arrives.  When those two are paid off, I’ll be finished climbing out of a fairly deep hole.  At the worst of it, I was behind about $10K on my mortgage and had $35K in CC debt.  It’s embarrassing just to type those totals.  It will feel incredible to have no more CC debt.

I checked Cap One’s preapproval link today.  No interest in applying for one of their cards, but I check it every once in a while to see if anything pops up.  I normally get no prequal offers, but recommendations for one of their AF classic platinum cards.  I figured that even though my score had improved considerably, I was still not getting anything from them because of the old closed account that wasn’t paid off yet.  Today, I received an offer for their Venture card with no AF.  There were also offers for two other no AF cards.

I currently have two open cards.  An Amex PR Gold charge card and a Capital One platinum card with a $39 AF.  Once I pay off the closed BofA and Chase cards, and my reports update, depending on the score increase I see, I am considering the Amex SPG.  But my main goals right now are building emergency fund and saving for downpayment on a larger house.

Anyway, when I first started trying to climb out of this mess, it seemed like there was no way out.  Thank you to everyone here for all of the helpful advice.

BofA Goodwill = Fail

Jan 072011

Well, I tried going to the top of the corporate ladder with a goodwill request to Bank of America to remove a 60 day late and 90 day late from my report.  I heard back from a woman who I had actually dealt with previously regarding erroneous reporting of lates by them on a closed account and had great success.  She is in consumer relations or something along those lines.  At any rate, she gave me the standard line that they are required to report my account accurately to the credit bureaus.  I am considering responding directly to her stating I understand their position, and remind her (very nicely) that they are not required to report ALL of their accounts to the bureaus and that only those that they do report are required to be accurate and as a result would she consider removing that account from my reports in it’s entirety.

The account has been closed since 07, paid off in full in 08.  I think the serious derogs from the 60 & 90 outweigh any possible benefit the account might have on my report (AAoA aspect specifically).  Would it be worth my time/effort to request this?  If not, those 2 baddies will continue to drag on my score until 2014.

Any insight anyone may have to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Old Cap One account with a late fee – Cap One cannot find

Dec 032010

Hi there – I have an old closed paid in full cap one account which has a late payment on for Jan o8. I called them a few weeks back and they said they would delete.

A week later it was removed from EX and then I had a letter from them say they had removed the error and would update all the CB.

Now 2 weeks later its still on EQ and TR and when I call Cap One no one can track my account even with SS and Account Number and all my info..  EQ and TR say the dispute was closed as Cap One confirmed there should be a later payment..

Any advice with a Cap One closed account on my file with a late Jan 08 payment… What can I do…  I want to get this off to help my score… as I am trying to close on a mortgage.

Thanks

Josh

CITI/Sears almost paid off, PFD?

Oct 202010

I’ve been paying 600 a month for almost a  year now to get this closed account paid off.  I send a check to the Attorney for them every month.  I am down to less than 600 remaining for my next payment next month.  Can I still negotiate a PFD?  Another question is if I have with PFD, the account is an 18 yo account, I’ll loose that AAOA if it goes PFD, but is the score hit Im taking on them still reporting out 120 days late every month worse?

Any advice is appreciated.

Three Charge Off Questions

Oct 072010

1) How is the charge off amount determined? I ask this because two different amounts appear on my wife’s reports for a GE Money Bank (GAP store card) charge off. One appears to be the balance on the date of first delinquincy (EQ and TU), while the other appears to be the balance on the date of the charge off (EX).

2) Can a bank continue updating a closed account (11/2006) after it was charged off (11/2008) and then paid (12/2008)? For example, can they send updates in 1/2009, 2/2009 and 3/2009?

3) What is the correct account history status on Experian for a paid charge off? For example, if a charge off was paid in 12/2008 — and the OC reported in 1/2009, 2/2009 and 3/2009 — would “Charge Off as of Nov 2008 to Mar 2009″ be correct? It’s worth noting that this account was closed in 11/2006.

Thank you.

Will Amex Delete Old Paid Collection…

Sep 282010

I previously had an Amex Green card with Amex that went into collections in 08, I’ve paid the account and Amex has issued me an Amex Optima credit card to redeem myself in the process. The question I have is will they delete the old collection account that is still reporting on my report? They backdated the Optima so I don’t need the paid off closed account for aging.

Closed account reporting status as 30 days past due

Sep 232010

I have a Cap 1 Auto account that I had for 6 months and it is closed and showing no lates, however the status is showing as 30 days past due.   Can a closed account have a status of 30 days past due?   this account shows up as a red flag so I’m assuming it is hurting me.

GW / Small Local Banks

Aug 282010

Does anyone on the board have experience writing GW to small / local banks? I have a CO from a local Colorado bank that is being reported on EX and TU that is killing my scores. I also have a closed account for a small bank in Kentucky that was paid in full, 15 year loan, that has multiple 30 day lates. The 30 day lates are more than three years ago so I don’t know if it even matters any longer but I was going to try to GW anyway. So, long story short… anyone have any guidance on GW?

RobertEG – Need your Help!

Aug 022010

DirecTV is claiming I owe them $400 on a closed account, which is completely invalid. I have the zero-balance statement from when we closed the account and I would like to send DirecTV a letter enclosing the statement and requesting they correct the situation. It seems like it would be nice to cite the section of the FCRA that requires creditors to only report correct information. Someone said you would have that information – can you please provide it to me? Thanks so much!

AU and closed accounts

May 272010

I was added as a AU to a credit card of my parents that they have had open since 2001.  I have a closed Discover card that I had since 1991 that still shows up as a closed account on my reports.  I understand that in order for a AU to work it needs to be older then any of your accounts.  My question is, does my parents card have to be older then open accounts or do closed accounts count as well???????
