I wanted a tv a year ago and Video Only approved me for a card with a $1000 limit. I paid the tv off last month, and I honestly had no other need for the card so I closed it. I was just alerted my score dropped 20 points, was closing the card a bad move? My experian credit profile said I had to many revolving accounts so I thought it was a good decision. In all I had three revolving accounts.

Last month while in store, I app’d for the card at the kiosk but was denied instant credit because “we are unable to process your request” (or something like that). It then told me to call the given toll free number.  Since getting a denial is not the most pleasant feeling in the world I, feeling flustered, closed out the screen and with tail between the legs and head down :smileysad:   proceeded to go home and tend to my wounded ego.  Once I got in my car, however, I realized that they probably needed verification since I was applying in SC with a VA home address (my mail is getting forwarded to me here).  No one in the store knew what number to call so I went back to the kiosk and went through the process again, getting the same message and phone number.  I called, they verified, and said I was approved for $500 and that the card would be sent to me.  A few days later, I got a notice saying that my CR has changed and sure enough it was already reporting…but the card never came.  This was maybe 2 weeks ago.

A few days ago, I get a letter in the mail saying that before they can process the card, I would have to call the number for verification.  I called, she said she had to ask a few questions, I told her I already went through this process, but could do it again.  She told me congratulations, I was approved for a CL of $500 and that the card would be here in 7-10 days.  I explained that I have my mail forwarded from my VA address and asked if that would be a problem.  She told me no and that I should have it closer to 10 days.

This morning I got an alert saying that there is a change on my CR. :smileyindifferent:  I went to look at my report and lo and behold, there is a 2nd TL reporting from GEMB/Walmart.  Then I realized what has happened.  Because I app’d twice, both went through as separate requests.  I called CSR back and asked them to confirm and she told me it has. I asked if she could just combine the limits into one card, she said no.  She asked if I wanted to keep the second card or cancel it.  I asked if it would be a bad thing to have (having negative future consequences) but she didn’t know the answer.  I told her to send it anyway, since it’s already reporting and I’d figure out what to do with it.

So my question to you guys is this…(I’m rebuilding and don’t have any experience with GEMB cards) would this 2nd card, help, hurt or not matter? I’ve read where the CLIs are pretty consistant but I’m wondering if having the 2nd would change that?  Does anyone know?

Thanks!

UPDATE- Ok, I have gone through most of the bills. I have made a list of charged off ones that are in collections and ones that have  not been charged off. My plan is to work with the CAs offering settlements on the charged off ones to pay those off with a pay for delete.  Sending out three letters today. Then I plan to call the ones that are still with the OC and work out payment plans. My tax return cannot come fast enough!!! Fortunately, it looks like my big credit cards (I had several that have gotten run up over the last two years) are with the OC still. The ones that are charged off are ones that are less than $1000. I do have 1 $2000 that just charged off and 1 that was $5k that charged off. Majority are less than $1000. I hope this is a good plan. I do not want to do bankruptcy, but will if someone sues. Then once I get all of the ones with the OC on a payment plan and after a year of ontime payments, I am going to do a good will letter with an explanation of what happened to have us fall behind. Hopefully I can get them to remove the lates. I also hope to do that with our mortgage too. That will be out of the payment plan April 1st.

A few years ago we had excellent excellent credit. Then we had a high risk pregnancy where I was on bedrest the entire time, an early delivery, baby was born ill and a hole in her heart. She had surgery at 8 mos old. I had emergency surgery a month after that. Then I was sick from an unknown illness. It  was just recently diagnosed as lupus and I am finally on meds. The hubby and I were both hospitalized at the same time in November. In addition, we did stupid things. He used a credit card that was empty and didn’t tell me about it. I didn’t know we had a bill. Missed the one payment and bam everything went up to 30% interest (this was before the card act) due to universal default. We struggled to keep up with it, but couldn’t. In November we stopped paying (November was when we were both hospitalized at the same time). Some of the cards have been referred to collection agents to collect for the Original creditor with offers of settlement. Some cards I still have and have worked out repayment plans. We almost lost our house. It went into foreclosure. Fortunately, I found out it went into foreclosure a few days afterwards. I was able to stop foreclosure and work with them to do a payment plan. We should be current on our mortgage in April and we get to revert back to our normal mortgage payments then. I got our cars caught up. Utilities and cell are caught back up. I have received some settelement offers from the CAs and plan on sending them PFD letters.

So now I am working on our credit cards. I am willing to do some PFDs for the settlement offers. One credit card – Capital One (two – one was in my name, one was in my husband’s name) has like 5 different CAs trying to collect on it. I plan on sending DVs for them this month. I want to settle the card, but I don’t want to nor do I have the money to pay the wrong company that is collecting.

Any advice how to get out of this mess? Once we get out of this mess, we plan to stay away from credit cards and only get one card. for emergencies! We want to sell our house and buy a new one in a couple of years.

Are there any benefits in getting multiple secured credit cards? Lets say for even persons starting out with no credit. Of course the card companies will have to be reporting to the credit bereaus. I was thinking since having multipe card companies reporting, that would build your credit faster since you have no credit history. keeping in mind that you pay your bills ontime.

Hi,

My bankruptcy was discharged in December of 2009, and I’ve just received a new Orchard credit card with a $300 limit. My question is, does it matter how much I use the card? Would it help if I charged it up near the limit and paid it off every month, or would charging $25 a month and paying that off have the same effect? I can easily use it for my groceries and things if that would help. Does anyone know?

Thanks so much!

My g/f added me as a authorized user on her CAPITAL ONE card in 2005. (six years ago).

Make a long story, it’s reflecting negative on my credit report because it’s 120+ days past due.

What makes matter worse, I’ve never used the card. Ever.

She did a horrible job handling her career, money, bills – and was clearly irresponsible.

She went into debt and just stop caring (young & foolish).

6 years later, it still shows on my credit report as a delinquency.

Any ideas or suggestions, can I have this remove? This is the 1 and only thing I have on my report that is negative.
