being a notary in and of itself is not a paying career.
many notaries do work for mortgage companies when done via long distance/Internet (ex. wells fargo, quicken, countrywide) in our area those that get that work make $ 100.00 – $ 150.00 per closing. some notaries charge a nominal fee usually $ 3.00- $ 5.00 for simple 1 page signature witnessing. almost all banks/savings and loans/credit unions provide free notary service to all customers. with the meltdown of sub-prime loans and the lack of refinancing and home sales at this time the work doing closings is extremely limited.
